RYOSUKE IRIE CONSIDERING MOVE TO AUSTRALIA; HAS NOT NOTIFIED CLUB OF FINAL DECISION
Braden Keith | December 11th, 2012 | Categories: Featured, International, News
Sources in Australia that are very close to St. Peter’s Western are reporting that while Ryosuke Irie is considering a move to Australia, they have not received any confirmation that a decision has been made, despite reports by different media outlets. Ryosuke Irie, his coach, and another coach who speaks both Japanese and English from the Itoman Swimming Club visited St. Peter’s 4 weeks ago while considering a move to Australia. During that time, Irie trained with the club for 4 days as a trial. There was consideration given to a mid-January 2013 move, but the club has still not been told by Irie’s people that this will happen for sure.
“Ryosuke is an outstanding swimmer and if he did come would definitely add value to our program,” the source at St. Peter’s said. “If he did come he would be an ideal training partner for Olympic finalist Mitch Larkin and Meagen Nay.”
Irie won three Olympic medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics: silver in the 200 backstroke and as a part of Japan’s 400 medley relay, along with bronze in the 100 backstroke. Despite seeming to have been around the sport forever, Irie is still only 22 years old. A change in training would perhaps change his season cycles, where he’s typically exhibited a very Japanese, fast-at-every-meet history.
